Two of the South West’s best hockey veterans featured in finals of the Bevan George and Kobie McGurk cups at the weekend. Boyanup Hockey Club star Anita Scott featured in the winning Outbacks side alongside tournament namesake Kobie McGurk. The Outbacks claimed the trophy after beating the Suns 3-0 in a dominant performance. Scott said the tournament — streamed on thewest.com.au — was an exciting showcase of Masters hockey. “(It was) a great concept and it was definitely a privilege and an honour to play in the inaugural Kobie McGurk cup and be the winners,” she said. “To also play with Kobie was awesome — she’s a true legend of the game.” Meanwhile in the Bevan George Cup final, Boyanup men’s captain Kane Weatherall just missed out on a piece of silverware when his Breakers were defeated 4-2 by the Suns. Boyanup’s Jason Vuletich and Associates’ Shane Jamieson claimed a bronze medal in the men’s competition as part of the Outbacks, who won 5-0 over the Highlanders. The tournaments were named after ex-Kookaburra and 2004 Athens Olympic gold medallist Bevan George and former Hockeyroo and 2006 Commonwealth games gold medallist Kobie McGurk. Men aged 35-50 and women aged 30 and above were able to nominate for selection in the two nine-day tournaments, which had their finals on Sunday.
