Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir has revealed star midfielder Hayden Young’s injury diagnosis after he was subbed out at quarter-time against Carlton.

Speaking on AFL360, Longmuir said Young had suffered an adductor strain but added he had “escaped” serious injury.

“It’s just come through, he’s got an adductor strain and at this stage he’ll miss this week,” Longmuir said.

“We’ll get some time frames to everyone as the week or next week unfolds.

“But we’ve escaped serious injury. It’s just a matter of whether we can get him back before our last game.”

The clash against the Blues was Young’s third game back from a serious hamstring injury sustained in May, and that required surgery.

The Game AFLW 2025

Young spent time on the medical bench under the attention of a Fremantle physio during the first quarter of Sunday’s come-from-behind win, before taking part in a brief and slow run-through on the field at quarter-time.

However, he was pulled off the ground and replaced by Neil Erasmus.

The 24-year-old is now racing to be fit for Fremantle’s likely finals campaign.

There are three matches left in the home-and-away season against Port Adelaide, Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs before the first week of finals, slated for the week of September 1.

“We’re cutting it pretty fine with timelines, so we’ll get a little bit more information back and see where the timelines fit,” Longmuir said.

“Clearly, the last couple of weeks show he’s important to us. He adds another dimension to our midfield and we’ve missed him most of the year.

“Having said that, we’ve got to this point without having him for much of the year, so we’ll be fine.”

Young returned from his hamstring injury as the sub in Fremantle’s epic win over Collingwood at the MCG in round 19 before he claimed his maiden Glendinning-Allan Medal in western derby 61 despite being subbed out at three-quarter-time.

Longmuir said Young was in a frustrating situation during his post-match press conference on Sunday at Optus Stadium, unable to build the resilience his body needs to avoid injury due to the fact he was sustaining injuries.

“When you miss as much work as he did over pre-season – he’s had repeat hammies – it puts you at serious risk when you come back,” he said.

“Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to buffer that stage that you need to regain full fitness but also the resilience in his body.”

A fully fit Young would be Fremantle’s X-factor come finals. the Victorian having shown his class to finish third in the Dockers’ best-and-fairest last season.

Erasmus is the likely replacement in midfield while the Dockers will also need to weigh up the return of dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe after his strong return from a calf complaint in the WAFL on Saturday.
