Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says it’s too early to tell just how much footy Sean Darcy will miss after the star ruck’s latest injury setback.
The Dockers revealed on Tuesday that Darcy had reinjured his calf despite missing the weekend’s western derby due to concussion protocols.
While the club did not put a timeline on the 27-year-old’s return, Longmuir admitted it would likely be multiple weeks.
“He’s reinjured the same calf he did in the pre-season, going to miss a bit of time, unfortunately. We haven’t put a timeline on it yet; we’re just getting some more information about it, so it’s too early to say,” he told 7News.
Darcy missed a chunk of the pre-season due to his first calf injury as Fremantle nursed him into the season before his concussion set him back.
While Mason Cox was steady on his Fremantle debut, Longmuir said the Dockers are unlikely to abandon their two-ruck setup despite another dominant performance from Luke Jackson.
“We haven’t done selection yet, and there’s a bit to work through with Carlton’s selection, but it’s been the model we’ve gone with and we feel that works,” he said.
In better news, Hayden Young appears to have got through the clash unscathed in his return from a hamstring injury.
“He’s probably a little bit sore, but through his hamstrings, he’s pulled up really well and played his role on the weekend,” Longmuir said.
Fremantle are overwhelming favourites against Carlton at home this weekend with the club in the spotlight over their handling of Elijah Hollands’ mental health episode.
Despite the crisis facing the Blues, Longmuir said he would not underestimate them.
“We just control what we can control and prepare for the best. We’ve seen they’ve been able to challenge some really good signs. The consistency perhaps isn’t there, but their best football is very good.”
Saturday’s clash will also be Fremantle’s Len Hall tribute game with Longmuir hoping his team can rise for the occasion.
“It’s an occasion we really appreciate and don’t take for granted. The club does a great job in honouring those who have represented our country, and hopefully we can match that on the field as well.”
