Fremantle midfielder Matt Johnson has escaped suspension for striking dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale in the Dockers’ win against Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday.

Johnson was fined $3000 — which can be downgraded to $2000 with an early guilty plea — after vision showed him slapping Neale on the left cheek at a contest.

The former Docker was given a free kick as a result, and while the action was deemed as careless conduct and high contact, the action was viewed as low impact meaning Johnson wouldn’t be banned.

Johnson had a strong game tagging Neale, who he held to 23 touches in Fremantle’s 25 win against Brisbane which extended their winning streak to a remarkable 11 games.

The 23-year-old will now be available to take on North Melbourne down in Bunbury on Saturday.

Defender Jordan Clark praised Johnson for his role in restricting Neale throughout the win.

“I couldn’t speak higher of Johnno’s progression in the last 12 to 24 months, and I think it’s only scratching the surface,” he said.

“I think we’ve got a really special player on our hands.”

Johnson wasn’t the only Docker to have their hip pocket hit, with forward Josh Treacy offered a $1000 fine should he submit an early guilty plea for staging in the final term.

In-form superstar Shai Bolton can also accept a $1000 fine for his first offence of careless contact with an umpire which occurred in the second term.
