Braden Quartermaine: No premiership winner has been more deserving than Geelong Cats in 2022

It’s hard to think there has ever been more deserving premiers than Geelong in 2022. Having finished in the top four in 13 of the past 16 seasons, the Cats have completely defied a system that is designed to equalise while refusing to turn to the excuse of rebuilding. Some clubs are so keen to spruik their youth that you would be forgiven for thinking they are competing to be the youngest, rather than the best. The Cats are in it to win it every year, yet somehow found themselves the target of criticism from cold and timid souls over a finals record that included a gut-wrenching run of eight week one finals losses from nine starts. Theodore Roosevelt’s famous “Man in the Arena” speech could have been written about the Geelong Football Club. And it was the release of that pent-up emotion – on faces marred by years of dust, sweat and blood - that made this an enjoyable grand final to watch despite the one-sided nature of the contest. Captain Joel Selwood, playing in his record-breaking 40th final, summed it up best immediately after the final siren. “They’re so hard to win and every side says it, but I think we deserved one,” Selwood said through his tears. “We’ve just been bashing away. We don’t apologise for being up there and having a crack at it each year.” The Tim Kelly mega trade was done with an eye on topping up an ageing team to win a premiership. Three years later it has helped deliver one, only for Geelong rather than West Coast. The Cats used some of the draft bounty for Kelly, including the Eagles’ first selection in 2020, to swoop on Greater Western Sydney star Jeremy Cameron a year later. The tense Cameron deal went down to the final seconds of the trade period that year, perhaps slightly beyond it, and it is impossible to think Geelong could have pulled it off without the two first round and two second-round selections they got from the Eagles. Cameron may not have been a significant figure in Saturday’s grand final romp over Sydney, with his two goals both coming in the last quarter, but he has been a major factor all season. The big left-footer was lured primarily as a successor to veteran key forward Tom Hawkins, who is five years his senior. But the crossover period always loomed as a golden opportunity for the Cats to have two of the competition’s best power forwards working in concert. After Cameron was hindered by injury last year, he played 24 of a possible 25 games this season for 65 goals while often working well up the ground, including even starting at some centre bounces. Hawkins kicked 67 goals in 25 games to make it 132 from the two big guys. While Cameron has flourished at his second home, Kelly has become a symbol of West Coast’s slump despite his form being pretty decent aside from a drop off in the number of goals he used to regularly kick as a Cat. Ironically, the Eagles’ problem isn’t that they were too ballsy over the Kelly trade. It’s that they weren’t brave enough when he was available a year earlier and that decision might have cost them the 2019 flag. Having gradually bent towards Geelong’s demands for Kelly, West Coast decided there was only so far they were prepared to go on the last day of the 2018 trade period. Then list manager Brady Rawlings said the Eagles had to draw a line. “We put forward a really strong position on day one and we improved that position throughout the trade period,” Rawlings said at the time. “But we just couldn’t go any further for our footy club.” West Coast’s final offer for Kelly that year was understood to be picks 20, 22 and a 2019 second-round selection. The Cats are thought to have been ready to let the mature-age revelation go if that future second-rounder was improved to a future first-rounder. The Eagles said no and their position seemed reasonable enough. But they went on to miss the top four on percentage and were tipped out by the Cats in a semifinal, with Kelly playing a starring role against them. Twelve months on, West Coast stumped up even more at the trade table despite Kelly now being out of contract. The Eagles were in the window coming off a flag in 2018 and should have pulled the trigger.
