Jones edges closer to Brisbane premiership triumph with Group 3 Winx Guineas win aboard The Three Hundred

Top Brisbane hoop Angela Jones inched closer to a metropolitan jockey premiership triumph, guiding home The Three Hundred to an all-the-way win in the Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) at Sunshine Coast. Despite being drawn wide, Jones fired the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding forward and eventually worked to the front after 500m. Angled down to the fence, the $11 TABtouch shot was soon accompanied by Apuntar ($6) on the outside and the pair attempted to steady the pace slightly. As the field fanned cornering for home, the pacesetting son of I Am Invincible continued to travel sweetly and had already drawn a length in front before Jones became mobile at the 300m. Once shaken up, The Three Hundred exploded into action and bounded three lengths clear with Ramp It Up ($31) beginning to give chase. But the tearaway front-runner’s turn of foot was simply unmatched, and he glided home to score by a length and a half from that pursuer. Early favourite Mister Bianco was scratched from the race after his jockey Ryan Maloney injured his back riding Caspernova to a runner-up effort in the second event. Without a replacement hoop deemed suitable by trainer Paul Shailer, he removed the market leader from the $300,000 clash only minutes from start time. With the success, Jones edged five wins clear of Emily Lang in the Brisbane premiership with only weeks left in the season, though she faces an imminent 10-day suspension should her Monday appeal fail. “You know their horses are fit,” Jones said. “Maybe he wasn’t putting it all into his races when he gets back so we really made a point that if we can get him away cleanly, we’d send him to the front, and he’d be winning. “We were able to do that – lovely and relaxed – and he is a different horse when he doesn’t have other horses to look around at. “It was a super dominant win today. “It has been a good season and hopefully I get a few more (wins) before I serve my suspension next week.”
