Team talk: The departures of star shooter Eleanor Cardwell and assistant coach Tracey Neville to new team Melbourne Mavericks leaves signings such as three-time title winner Romelda Aiken-George to make up new ground as the Thunderbirds look to defend their first championship in a decade.

MELBOURNE MAVERICKS

The Game AFL 2024

2023 finish: N/A

Projected 2024 finish: 8th

Team talk: Born from the ashes of Collingwood's demise, the Mavericks are amping up for their debut season under inaugural captain Amy Parmenter. No wins during the pre-season tournament could mean the team is still working on crucial chemistry, while they've already had to replace two key players after serious injury.

GIANTS NETBALL

2023 finish: 6th

Projected 2024 finish: 4th

Team talk: Returning captain Jo Harten has a job on her hands as the Giants look to improve upon their 2023 rankings alongside new co-captain Jamie-Lee Price. Two wins and two losses at the Team Girls Cup showed off new recruits Jodi-Ann Ward and NZ import Sam Winders as they head into a fierce opener with Fever on April 13 in Sydney.

MELBOURNE VIXENS

2023 finish: 4th

Projected 2024 finish: 3rd

Team talk: Captain Kate Moloney led her team to two wins out of four matches in the pre-season tournament, with Diamonds player Sophie Garbin recruited alongside young talents Zara Walters and Lily Graham. They will look to show the Mavericks they are the top dog in Melbourne in their opening round clash.

NSW SWIFTS

2023 finish: 2nd

Projected 2024 finish: 1st

Team talk: After losing the 2023 premiership in extra time to the Thunderbirds, the Swifts have made an early statement about this year's intentions by taking out the pre-season tournament. They appear to have capitalised on the return of star shooter Sam Wallace-Joseph after a long-term knee injury - the team to beat.

QUEENSLAND FIREBIRDS

2023 finish: 7th

Projected 2024 finish: 7th

Team talk: A fourth-placed finish in the Team Girls Cup and pre-season wins over the Mavericks and Fever are promising signs for the Queenslanders. They only finished ahead of the defunct Magpies in 2023 so plenty of room to move up the ladder.

SUNSHINE COAST LIGHTNING

2023 finish: 4th

Projected 2024 finish: 5th

Team talk: Two wins and two losses to top squads the Thunderbirds and Vixens, in the Team Girls Cup showed Lightning is keeping up the pressure. They have long being contenders but will need and extra push to win the titles as star goaler Steph Fretwell marks her third year as captain.

WEST COAST FEVER

2023 finish: 3rd

Projected 2024 finish: 6th

2023 finish: Only four players remain from the third-ranked 2023 season with the new line-up looking like it needs time to settle. Under coach Dan Ryan Fever only managed one win.
