A fierce contest between the Southside Demons and the East Freo Sharks has resulted in the first draw of the 2022 WANL season, while the likes of Western Roar and West Coast Warriors have extended their respective winning streaks.

It was a tight contest from the outset under the Friday night lights at Gold Netball Centre with both the Demons and the Sharks locked in a battle to take the early lead.

Although the Demons managed a two-point advantage at quarter time, the Sharks fought back to level the scores 25-25 at half time.

There was a sense of deja vu during the second half as both teams continued their intense battle.

While the Demons managed to lead 40-35 at three-quarter time, the Sharks once again fought back as the contest came down to the wire during the final quarter.

At the final whistle, the scores were level at 54 apiece, with Sharks’ Larrissa Harrison scoring a game-high 36 goals, while Demons’ Rebecca Lill and Ashleigh Neal managed 23 and 20 goals respectively.

Elsewhere, Rangers bounced back from their round two loss with a convincing 40-goal victory over Peel Lightning.

From the outset, Rangers were quick to dominate on the court, managing a 20-goal haul. Lightning would not manage their first goal until Kasey Ridout managed a free goal shot four and a half minutes into the opening quarter.

The Rangers’ domination continued throughout the remainder of the match, shutting down the Lightning wherever possible in defence and in the mid-court, as well as keeping them to only scoring in the single digits for each quarter.

Despite the Lightning fighting back during the last quarter, their efforts proved futile as the Rangers walked away the 73-33 victors, with Ellie Smart (33 goals) and Samantha Campbell (23 goals) putting on a dominant display inside the goal circle.

Kasey Ridout was a highlight for the Lightning, scoring a game-high 29 goals for the match.

Meanwhile, Western Roar extended their undefeated streak to three wins with a 64-42 win over the Souwest Jets.

While the Jets were able to have fast starts during the first half, including impressive debuts from Sophie Eastaugh and Larrissa McAllister, the Roar would fight back with strong defence and accurate shooting to lead by 14 goals at half time.

The Roar took control of the contest during the second half, leaving the Jets struggling to fight back.

Although the Jets strived to fight back with a fast start to the last quarter and easy interceptions, the Roar were ultimately just too strong.

When all was said and done, Roar held on to win by 22 points with Emma Putt managing 27 goals for Roar, while Simone Dalkin and Eastaugh managed 13 goals each for the Jets.

Meanwhile, the West Coast Warriors extended their winning streak to a third win with a 57-45 win over Curtin Hamersley Comets at Curtin Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams were firing out the gate during the opening term although the Warriors managed to build up a lead late with goals from Hana Stokes and Hayley McKee, backing up quick driving from Numi Tupaea and Kellie Baker.

While the Warriors managed to pull away early in the second quarter, a strong defensive effort from Mia Henderson and Liz Dronfield saw the Comets fight back.

However, the Warriors held the lead 30-18 at half time.

Although the Comets fought hard to try and make some sort of comeback during the second half, the Warriors held strong to walk away the 12-goal victors.

In the 20/Under competition, Western Roar managed a dominant 60-33 over Souwest Jets, Southside Demons edged out East Freo Sharks 42-38, Peel Lightning held off Rangers 48-42, and Curtin Hamersley Comets defeated West Coast Warriors 56-40.

In the men’s competition, Western Roar defeated Southside Demons 54-32, and Curtin Hamersley Comets held off West Coast Warriors 46-36.
