Jaron Rillie: Son of Perth coach joins Wildcats roster as development player after successful US college stint
Perth Wildcats have signed Jaron Rillie - the son of coach John Rillie - as a development player for the upcoming NBL season, in a move that continues the club’s history of father-son coach-player relationships.
The 23-year-old is coming off two standout campaigns with University of Northern Colorado in the US college system, where he averaged 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
Rillie said he was looking forward to running out in front of the Red Army ahead of his first chance to suit up in Friday night’s intra-club scrimmage at Morley Recreation Centre.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Perth Wildcats and grateful for the chance to represent such a successful club,” he said.
“Growing up, playing professionally was always the goal, so to be here now with such a strong organisation is really special.
“I’ve heard a lot about the Red Army and the atmosphere they bring, and I can’t wait to get out there, compete, and win games.”
In a Wildcats release that did not make mention of Rillie’s family ties when announcing his singing, Perth’s coach said he was confident in Jaron’s potential to grow his game in WA.
“Adding Jaron as a DP adds depth in our backcourt. After a successful college career, I look forward to seeing continued growth as he transitions into the pro ranks,” he said.
The Wildcats have had a history of father-son coach-player relationships, with inaugural Perth captain Mike Ellis - and brother Glenn - coached by the late Gordon Ellis in 1983.
Stephen Black was coached by father Alan between 1998 and 2003, including winning the NBL title together in 2000.
Wildcats general manager of basketball operations Danny Mills expects Rillie to slip seamlessly into the pro level.
“Jaron has proven himself at every step of his college career and has a very bright future as a pro,” Mills said.
“With his high basketball IQ and ability to impact the game as both a playmaker and efficient scorer, we believe he’ll be a great fit for our current group and someone our fans will enjoy watching.”
