Malakai Champion is a kid from the Goldfields with a name built for the big stage - and the talent to back it up.

The teenager is still a year away from being draft eligible, but performances like the one on the weekend - where he booted three goals for Subiaco in an underdog win over the previously undefeated Perth colts - means he is firmly on track for higher honours.

And if the three goals from 21 touches and 10 marks weren’t enough, he added a very nice speccy on the wing to cap off a very nice afternoon.

Champion, 17, has kicked 17 goals from 12 games in the colts, playing his first full season at the level after a cameo last year.

The forward was named All-Australian at under-16 level last year, and was a train-on bottom-aged player in the under-18s championship squad this season.

The mark he took at the weekend demonstrated some of the reasons he is so highly rated. Not only did he execute the skill, but he summed up the situation on the way down, spotting up a teammate running past with a quick handball rather than taking the pace off the game by going back to his mark.

It’s also why he was playing senior football in Kalgoorlie when he was just 15 years old - so young that they had to double check with his mum if it was alright.

He kicked three goals on debut for Mines Rovers that day.

His coach at the time, Marc Johnstone, told the Kalgoorlie Miner that Champion was one of the most impressive kids he’d dealt with in footy.

“He’s just an absolute ripper, a once-in-a-lifetime kid this one (who) I think he can be a top-10 (AFL) draft pick, that’s for sure,” Johnstone said.
