West Australian rising tennis ace Talia Gibson eyeing off becoming grand slam seed after breakthrough start

Australia’s newest seed slayer, Talia Gibson, says 2026 has already surpassed her wildest dreams, but added that won’t stop her from eying off becoming a grand slam seed herself. The 21-year-old Perth girl will make her Billie Jean King Cup debut this week after cracking the top 100 in style, taking down three seeded players on the way to a quarter final at the prestigious Indian Wells tournament, often referred to as the “fifth slam”, before slaying four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka in Miami. Gibson’s Miami charge was halted by world No.3 Elena Rybakina. But the results in the United States are the perfect platform for Gibson to launch into Australia’s Cup tie with Great Britain and are just the beginning of what the rising West Aussie is hoping to achieve heading into Roland Garros and Wimbledon. “Setting some goals at the start of the year and now having already achieved quite a few of them, only a couple of months in, has been very exciting, and I’m super proud of the results that I’ve had,” she told The West Australian. “It’s really exciting for me now with the doors that have opened and the opportunities that have opened up in the next couple of months, and some big tournaments I haven’t played before. “And being able to play more of these top players in the coming months is exciting and will be a great opportunity to try and get my ranking down and get better as a player as well.” Gibson will receive automatic entry into grand slams for the first time in her career after working her way to world No. 56 and becoming the second-highest-ranked female Aussie behind Maya Joint, having only broken into the top 100 in March. And, as humbly as always, the young gun said it came as a surprise even to her. “Direct entry into Grand Slams, these are all things I’ve been wanting to achieve and wanting to do for a really long time, so it’s very exciting for me,” she said. “Being cemented inside that top 100 and kind of belonging in the main draw of a grand slam now has been something that I’ve dreamt of ever since I was really young. “I think it’s been a bit of a ‘pinch me’ kind of moment, having been able to do it in a time where I wasn’t really expecting it. And now that it’s all happened, it’s still a little bit surreal to be honest. “I’m always reminding myself of how far I’ve come and to be super proud of the journey that I’ve had so far. I hope that I’m able to, you know, inspire some young Aussie tennis players, being from Perth or just Australia in general, being able to achieve what I have.” But like any star athlete, Gibson isn’t allowing herself to become content with more than half the season still at her feet. “The main focus is always going to be to just keep getting better, but if I were to set more like a ranking sort of goal, I think the next goal for me would be hopefully to be seeded at slams,” she said. “That would be really amazing and a really big next step. But at the moment I’m pretty close to the top 50, so if I can also maybe crack that by the end of the year, I’d be extremely happy. “With how far I’ve come this year, I’m just super proud of what I’ve already achieved. So anything I do moving forward is just going to be even more awesome.” Indian Wells was a huge breakthrough moment for the 21-year-old, who’d never beaten a seeded player before sending three in a row packing, including seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, having already gone through qualifiers. It only got better under the bright lights of Miami as Gibson got the rematch with Osaka she had been waiting for. “I kind of said to myself, to be honest, in those couple of tournaments, I hope I come up against her again because I’d love to have the opportunity to play her after quite a few months and feeling like my game was quite a bit better than when I played her last,” she revealed. “She’s such a champion. It’s always a great experience playing someone like her and someone on her level. I think I was able to go out there and be a lot calmer, focus on myself a lot more and not worry about who it was down the other end. I think that allowed me to play a lot more freely. “Also coming up against Elena Rybakina, you know, No.3 in the world, she’s got a massive game, a massive serve - I think it was just really cool to be able to play all of those girls and get a feel for the different styles and different ways that some of these girls are playing. “It’s all been a bit unexpected with some of the results that I had and the players that I beat, considering that before all of this, I’d beaten maybe one or two players inside the top 100, so these are pretty big wins for me. “So that was just really exciting to see how competitive I was able to be with even some of the best in the world. Moving forward, I think I’m able to take a lot of confidence out of that and really believe that I belong in that top 100.” Her results have seen her selected for Australia’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier against Great Britain on April 10 and 11 in Melbourne, joining up with a raft of young Australian talent. “It’s so great to see so many of the girls doing so well at the moment,” she said. “Everyone is so extremely supportive of each other. I think we’re all very uplifting. At the same time, we’re able to take a lot of confidence from when each of us has had success.”
