WAFL 2021: Greg Clark lives his dream by kicking late game-winning goal for Subiaco against West Perth

Greg Clark lived every footballer’s dream of kicking the match-winning goal in the dying minutes on Saturday — but only by accident. With about a minute left and his Lions trailing West Perth by three points, the gun midfielder swooped on a loose ball after a boundary throw-in from the forward pocket and kicked truly from a tight angle. “Coming up to it (the throw-in), I started on-ball but we had to rotate a few guys out, so I just had to move forward,” Clark said. “It was a bit of an accident I ended up there. “I just found myself free at the top of the 50, the stoppage occurred so I just thought I’d go and a hole opened up. “You think about it as a kid, always wanting to take that shot after or close to the siren. I was happy to just put it away.” Clark’s heroics delivered Subiaco a stirring three-point victory at Provident Financial Oval and helped his side maintain its unbeaten start to the 2021 season. The clutch goal capped a dominant performance by the 23-year-old, who was seemingly everywhere racking up 37 disposals. The former State 18s captain has relished a more permanent move into Subiaco’s engine room this season, having also accumulated 25 and 21 disposals in the first two rounds respectively. “I played a lot of half-back and wing but when guys retire, the younger guys have to step up and this year’s my opportunity,” Clark said. “(Coach) Beau (Wardman) has been really good giving me all the opportunity to learn through a pre-season playing on-ball.” Clark and Wardman lamented Subiaco’s slow start for the third consecutive week after they conceded six of the first seven goals to West Perth. But again, for the third consecutive week, the Lions fought back with Clark and captain Leigh Kitchin leading the way. “It seems to be a bit of a trait for us,” Wardman said of the slow starts. “We went through on Wednesday and turned a few things over just to explore that. “A few of those things didn’t seem to work, but it’s something we’ll have to continue to refine. “The ability for the boys to just settle into the game plan is probably the hard part, where the added speed in the game early on makes it difficult. “When you can get your run on momentum’s really tough to stop at the moment. It’s something all teams are probably exploring to try find a solution for.” Wardman said prized recruit Brandon Matera and swingman Aaron Heal were both strong chances to return from hamstring injuries for Saturday’s clash with West Coast reserves.
