Good Fortune Duck House review: April Ooi visits iconic Perth Chinese restaurant’s Victoria Park location

For me, 2026 is all about exercising free will. My list of new year’s “ins” ranges from mildly whimsical to straight up unhinged. They include saying no without explanation, eating dessert for breakfast, and ordering anything I want (not necessarily the sensible option). For example, I recently discovered I could get a whole platter of Peking duck without a special occasion. This might sound obvious to some, but in my family, the formal banquet dish is reserved for only the most revered date, Chinese New Year, and rationed out to one pancake per person. So, when I ordered a whole platter between two at Good Fortune Duck House, it felt pretty devious — yet entirely the correct choice. I visited the Victoria Park location. It is deceptively calm and casual on the outside, but inside is an old-school Chinese restaurant that is almost always bustling, with tables packed closely together and waiters swerving between them like F1 drivers. The standout was definitely the Peking duck ($22 for five pieces). The duck itself had a shiny thin skin, and the pancake it was wrapped in was pillowy-soft and was served with just the right amount of hoisin sauce. The roast meat combo plates are also a must-try. We ordered a small plate of roast duck and barbecue pork. Both were done superbly, but the pork was my favourite because of its lacquered sticky-sweet glaze. My boyfriend insisted on the Good Fortune Special Fried Rice ($16). I prefer white rice with my roast and barbecue meats to balance out all the salt, but he loved it. The bits of duck in the rice definitely set it apart, making it worthy of its name. Lastly, we tried the deep-fried prawn toastie ($10). This was more toast than prawn, and was the clear weakest dish on the table. As for drinks, they have a bunch of Chinese favourites like young coconut juice ($5) and lemon tea ($4.50). They also get extra points for being BYO with $1 corkage a head. Cheap, cheerful, and ridiculously delicious, there is no wonder Good Fortune Duck House — in Victoria Park and the OG restaurant in the city — are Perth icons.
