South West Slammers men’s side broke a 16 game losing streak with their thrilling one-point win over Warwick Senators on Saturday night in round 15 of the NBL1 West season.

In night two of their double header weekend the Slammers went to Warwick Stadium and came away with the win over the second-last Senators.

The Slammers came back from as much as 17 points during the third term, and 12 in the final quarter, to secure their second win for the year 110-109.

Philmon Gebrhiwet was the hero, scoring a layup in the dying seconds to hand his side a much-deserved win after months of narrow defeats throughout the season.

The sides were going blow-for-blow until half-time when the Senators took control until the seven minute mark of the final term with a 12-point lead. But from there the Slammers didn’t die wondering, fighting hard to stay in touch.

Plenty of players stepped up in the win, Gebrhiwet filled the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 assists andd six rebounds, while big man Jhaylon Martinez dropped 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Skipper Pharrell Keats scored 18 points, plus three rebounds and assists, Rhys Barrett top scored with 19 and Jack Flynn chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.

The women’s side continued their poor run of form in the double header weekend with a 102-58 loss to the Senators on Saturday.

Hana Lacey-Rameka again starred with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals, while centre Melanie Hoyt dropped 12 points along with grabbing eight rebounds.

On Friday night the side suffered a close loss to East Perth Eagles at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre by 13 points.

The men’s side also fell short of the Eagles, going down 112-101.

Much like the following night Slammers’ imports Gebrhiwet (23 points) and Martinez (22 and 7 rebounds) led the way along with Dante Matakatea with 13 points and nine assists.

This Friday night the Slammers will celebrate 30 years since their 1996 championship win.

They will face the Cockburn Cougars at Eaton Recreation Centre, with the women kicking proceedings off at 6.30pm then the men at 8.30pm.
