SWFL 2023: Bulldogs colts complete undefeated season under Troy Hollands after blitzing HBL in grand final

Bunbury’s sustained success in the colts competition under Troy Hollands continued on Sunday at Payne Park, with his Bulldogs completing an undefeated premiership season. Cashing in on a howling north-west breeze favouring the Herbert Road end, the home side overpowered Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault 13.21 (99) to 3.11 (29). Bunbury’s fleet-footed utility Peter Woods claimed the KJ Lynn Medal for best on ground, however, he had plenty of mates who joined him in contributing heavily. There was no shortage of niggle in the game early, as both sides attempted to gain a foothold in the contest. However, with the wind favouring the Herbert Road end, the ball lived in Bunbury’s forward line were lengthy passages of play. This stalemate was eventually broken at the 11-minute mark courtesy of Lucas Andrews, who within a centimetre of the boundary line, booted a majestic 48m goal at the right half-forward flank, despite a sea of defenders hot on his hammer. Andrews’ effort was matched a short time later by HBL counterpart Lattrell May which gave the Lions some valuable momentum heading into time-on. However, a trademark of Hollands-coached teams — finishing quarters strongly — bloomed once again under the overcast sky, with Bunbury booting two goals in as many minutes during time-on to extend their margin. Despite the lead, the Bunbury boss made it clear at quarter-time that more improvement was possible. “We are composed now,” he said. “They are outnumbering us at the contest right now, because our work-rate isn’t at the standard it needs to be. Be bold, be brave and let’s get on top.” Unfortunately for David Newman’s Lions, they were unable to cash in on their two opportunities with the wind, which ultimately was the difference in this contest. Leading by 17 points at half-time, the free-flowing Bulldogs piled on eight unanswered goals in the second half, while restricting Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault to six behinds. In defeat, Newman praised the family-like nature of his playing group. There was also an element of drama in this decider before half-time, when it was feared Bulldogs youngster Cody Johnston was ineligible to play in the second half, following an accidental interchange mix-up. However, he was given the green light during the interval and started the third quarter.
