Murder victim Kym Taylor’s mum vows she will not stop fighting for justice after accused were acquitted

The mother of murder victim Kym Taylor says she will not stop fighting for justice after two people accused of being involved in her daughter’s killing were acquitted. Courtney Aaron says her world was ripped apart when Stacey Lea Wright, 30, and William Joseph Wright, 48, walked free from the Supreme Court last month after a retrial. “This needs to go back to the Supreme Court,” Ms Aaron said. “I am on a mission to see that justice is done for my daughter.” Ms Wright, 30, was accused of murdering Ms Taylor — whom she had only met hours earlier — in October 2018 by hitting her in the back of the head with the metal ball from a tow bar, shattering her skull into 38 pieces. She denied killing Ms Taylor — whose body was found by a bushwalker about a month later — claiming the last time she saw her was when she dropped her off on Stock Road in southern Perth. Ms Wright’s father also denied helping cover up the crime, including by helping to bury Ms Taylor in a shallow grave in Bedfordale. After hearing three weeks of evidence it took a jury just 11/2 hours to clear the pair on all charges. The first trial resulted in a hung jury. The father and daughter, as well as a second man who cannot be named for legal reasons, were originally charged with murder. But State prosecutors altered the charges on the eve of the first trial last year and after the other man agreed to become a State witness. “I did not know you could even do that,” Ms Aaron told The West Australian. “I thought a charge of murder was a charge of murder. “We didn’t even know there was a deal going on.” She said she now wanted her daughter’s case to be revisited once again and was in the process this week of writing to senior government officials, as well as the DPP, about the case. “When I heard the verdict ... my entire world was ripped apart, it just fell apart,” Ms Aaron said. “I isolated myself and completely shut down.” Ms Taylor’s stepfather, Dayna Brown, said he also wanted the case re-examined. “We would like to pursue every legal possible way to get justice for Kym,” he said. “This is all about bringing those who are responsible to account for their actions.” Ms Aaron said she and her family were traumatised by some of the details aired in court about her daughter’s murder. “As I sat in that court room l heard things no mother should ever hear and I saw images no mother should ever see,” she said. “There has just been devastation and disappointment the whole way along.” In a statement, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said the charges proceeded upon were based on a “determination of the reasonable prospects of conviction of the accused on the basis of the evidence available at the time of the decision”. It said an “extensive consultation” was carried out with Ms Taylor’s family in regards to the decision. “The ODPP does not agree that the prosecution could or should have been handled differently,” the statement said. “Whether there are any further investigative avenues is a matter for WA Police.” Ms Aaron strongly maintains she was only informed about the new charges and was never “consulted”. WA Police declined to comment.
