Fears are growing for a Norwegian national who vanished while diving at North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane.

The man, aged in his 20s, went missing about 10.40am off Point Lookout on the island's northeastern tip, about 60km from Brisbane.

Search teams in boats, helicopters and on jet skis have so far failed to find him.

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter has been searching an area near the popular Flat Rock dive site, a natural rocky island is surrounded by coral gardens with depths of up to 35 metres.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority response centre is helping police with the search.

"Queensland police and Volunteer Maritime Rescue services have deployed maritime assets and AMSA has tasked four search and rescue helicopters to conduct an aerial search of the area," it said.
