The Ongerup townsite has been issued with a hazmat warning due to potentially dangerous smoke blowing from a rubbish fire sparked at the local tip.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the warning at 11.34am on Thursday, requesting residents remain inside with doors and windows closed.

There is no direct threat to the community.

The alert was sparked by a fire at the tip near Gnowangerup-Jerramungup Road and Jaekel Street, reported at 11.14am.

DFES reports the fire is burning general waste and wind is blowing potentially dangerous smoke in an easterly direction towards the town.

Firefighters from Ongerup Bushfire Brigade are on the scene.

WHAT TO DO

  • As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.
  • People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.
  • People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully. Road information may also be available from Main Roads WA by visiting the Main Roads Travel Map, calling 138 138 or by contacting your Local Government Authority.
