Before the service is able to get back on the tracks, the long-awaited Australind train has been vandalised. An image emerged earlier this week of the train being tested on the northern train lines — adorned with graffiti. Speaking to reporters in Perth, Premier Roger Cook said the vandalism was “incredibly disappointing”. “The new Australind is going to be an important way that people can travel between Bunbury and the towns between Perth,” he said. “Very sad to see that someone might take the decision to graffiti this new transport asset, I hope that the Transport Department does everything it can to make sure we are protected.” A spokesperson from the Public Transport Authority said the graffiti on the Australind had since been removed and security personnel continues to monitor the train around the clock. “The PTA works closely in partnership with WA Police to combat graffiti on our public transport system. We urge anyone who witnesses vandalism or suspicious behaviour to report it by contacting the Transperth InfoLine at 13 62 13,” they said. The long-awaited return of the South West train line was initially slated for mid-2025 following upgrades to the Armadale service but has since been pushed back to early 2026. The PTA spokesperson said dynamic testing has started this week which will see the railcar gradually increase speeds of up to 40km/h. “In coming months, the Australind will undergo key milestones, such as increasing speed, brake testing and system functionality and performance testing before it begins passenger service early next year,” they said.
