The bricks have arrived and the walls are going up, with work on the $2.1 million Harvey Community and Sporting Facility on track for completion by July.

Community members have been rallying together and fundraising for the upgrades for more than 12 years.

Bunbury firm Civilcon WA were awarded the contract to renovate the current Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre to the tune of $1.5 million, which will include a function room, change rooms, a tiered spectator viewing area and kitchen.

Although ground works began in May, it was when brickwork began in late September that things began feeling very real for centre manager David Marshall.

“It’s really exciting to see the construction of the Harvey Community and Sporting Facility starting to take shape,” Mr Marshall said.

“After a long community fundraising campaign based on artist impressions, it’s so pleasing to have a ‘concrete and bricks’ perspective of what the future facility will ultimately look like.”

Project supervisor at Civilcon Leon Buswell said the construction team were on right on track, despite recent wet weather.

“With this kind of works and ground conditions, to get the construction out of the ground in winter months is always a challenge but now with the finer weather and the ground works completed construction can progress as scheduled,” he said.

“Currently we are still bricking up the retaining walls, some structural steel has been erected and in a few weeks we will be importing more fill for the site.

“The ground slab should be on schedule for mid-November with practical completion for the build estimated mid-June 2020.”
