UGSFL 2025: Intriguing round of results as Hawks stay top, premiers knocked off and Cougars cause an upset

Narrogin remain on top of the ladder after a round of upsets and surprises in the Upper Great Southern Football League competition at the weekend. Reigning premiers Boddington were shock losers, Katanning Wanderers pushed contenders Wickepin and Kukerin-Dumbleyung scored a big upset over Wagin in Think Mental Health Round. The Hawks kicked off round seven on Saturday and led by a dominant display from reigning Leo Graham medallist Tom Kilpatrick, they were too strong for Brookton-Pingelly in wet conditions. Played at Pingelly, a four goal to nil first term from the visitors set up a 24-point win as Kilpatrick starred in the midfield. The Hawks managed to kick only one more goal, coming in the fourth term, and despite their inaccuracy they prevailed 5.11 (41) to 2.5 (17). The Panthers kicked one goal in the second and third quarters but were left to rue their slow start. Kilpatrick booted two of his side’s five goals in a best-on-ground display while captain Jordan Heil, vice-captain Declin Mumby and key forward Will Wiggett were the others to hit the scoreboard. Fraser Goode, Declan Phillips, Brad Timms, Kilpatrick, Heil and Byron Blevin were vital in the Hawks sixth win of the season that keeps them on top of the ladder with a superior percentage over the Warriors. The Panthers were best served by Jacob Sounness, Joshua Hughes, Liam Beacom, Daniel Trevaskis, Lewis Parsons and Adam Brock while Nicholas Haslam and Finn O’Reilly kicked their goals. The Cats handed the Eagles their second loss of the season on Sunday in Williams. The Eagles kicked just one goal after half-time as the Cats purred to a 16-point triumph. Simon Panizza and Bradley Jetta shone, kicking five goals between them as the Cats got over the line 8.7 (55) to 5.9 (39). Noah Logie, Jarryd Morton, Kyle Shanahan, Nick Panizza and Jonty Petchell joined the pair in the best players. The Eagles won the second term after kicking 3.4 but were outworked in the second half despite the best efforts of Ben Sherry, Blake Reynolds, Matt Giumelli, Samuel Cooper, Matthew Sherry and Jordan Hughes, while Dylan Kick booted three majors. The Warriors recorded their sixth win of the season but the Tigers pushed them across the four quarters in Wickepin on Sunday. The Tigers started superbly with four unanswered goals in the first but the home side responded with a 10-goal second half on their way to a 16-point win. Boom recruit Kayle Kirby kicked four goals while Trent O’Brien, Jordan Flavel, David Roche, Ben Hankinson, Blake White and Kyle Medcalf were strong contributors. The visitors were best served by James Laurino, Ryan Pontillo (three goals), Tramain Way (three), Caleb Quartermaine and Zane Sutherland. The Cougars kicked a big score in their second win of the season, holding out the Bulldogs by 29 points at Matera Oval. Howie Clegg, Peter Gioulis and Jake Nelson finished with four goals each, powering the visitors to a 16.10 (106) to 11.11 (77) triumph. A seven-goal second quarter was the catalyst for the Cougars, as they held a 40-point buffer at the main break. Star midfielder Will Liston won the match ball in Think Mental Health Round and was well supported by Jonty Robinson, Jye Depane, Nelson, Austin Shotter and Toby Perrin. The Bulldogs had strong contributions from Riley Hill, Caleb Datson, Cooper Schulz, Nicholas McMahon, Max Mumme and Alfred Finlayson.
