Brian Charles Parfitt: Man accused of smashing ambulance while naked sought to self-represent in court

The man accused of smashing through a moving ambulance’s windscreen while naked was told to shoosh and had his prison audio link muted by a Kalgoorlie magistrate during a recent court appearance. Brian Charles Parfitt, 25, asked to represent himself in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Thursday, claiming no lawyers had spoken to him since his previous appearance in early January. During the January appearance he had his bail refused for the charges of endanger life, health or safety of a person, criminal damage and obscene act in public. He is alleged to have used his head and torso to break through the windscreen of an ambulance, causing $4000 damage. At this week’s hearing, magistrate Donna Webb told Mr Parfitt his charge was too serious for him to represent himself. When Mr Parfitt continued to beg that he be allowed to speak and represent himself, Ms Webb told him to shoosh and then muted the audio from the Casuarina Prison link. When the link was unmuted, Mr Parfitt told the court to look at his record to see he had never stolen anything in his life. Ms Webb told him he was not charged with stealing, and he continued to yell, saying the court knew nothing except what was in the newspaper and media. He told the court he had been homeless before the offending and that he “bled out and died” after fracturing his skull. Ms Webb again clarified his charges were too serious to self-represent, and he then asked only to be represented by Aboriginal Legal Service lawyer Leneva Polmear, not his current lawyer, David Pawson. The matter was adjourned for three weeks.
