Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Year 12s proud as punch after receiving their 100% recycled leavers jackets

A group of Bunbury Year 12 students are looking like the coolest and most sustainable kids on the block after receiving their leavers jackets made out of 100 per cent recycled materials. The 2022 Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Year 12s finally received their leavers jackets this month after the student executive council spent weeks of planning how to make the jackets environmentally sustainable. It comes after the council’s decision to focus their efforts on ways they can implement more sustainable initiatives in the school. The fabric for the jackets is made from recycled plastic water bottles and produced in an environmentally sustainable factory. School captain Paige Snelling said the council was really passionate when planning the leavers jackers. “We wanted to make the school as environmentally sustainable as possible, so while we were planning initiatives, our Head of Wellbeing teacher Mr Andrew Lincoln suggested the idea of trying a different company to make the jackets,” she said. “The company uses 100 per cent recycled water bottles which we thought was really cool and it follows our attitudes and values as a year group. “We had a meeting with the company and they showed us all the designs they did for other schools and told us what was possible, and we ended up choosing a style we are all happy with.” School captain Charlie Youngson said it feels good to be wearing clothing that is good for the planet. “I think we are really proud of this project and it’s something other schools around the area should look into too in the future, because it’s not anything more expensive and feels great.” School captain Paige Snelling the Year 12 group was very pleased with the outcome. “We were all so excited to finally get our hands on them, we have been waiting for them for a while and I think they will be so good in winter,” she said. Other sustainable swaps the school has implemented includes purchasing 100 per cent recycled toilet paper in all the bathrooms, recycled copy paper for all printing, recyclable Tupperware and food packaging in the canteen and recycling bins stationed thought the school.
