Children’s author Cristy Burne shares advice with South West students at Young Writer’s Collective
Aspiring writers across the South West had the opportunity to learn from the best last week, with Perth-based Cristy Burne visiting the region for the Young Writer’s Collective.
Held at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, 150 students took part in the workshop to improve their writing skills, with assistance from the eight-time published author.
With a special focus on the intersection of story, science, technology and creativity, Ms Burne’s intention throughout the day was encouraging the students to “try”.
“I want the children to have fun when they write, but I also have the hidden agenda of trying to get them to be freer and less afraid,” she said.
“There is a huge pressure to be perfect in everything they do, with how they act, how they look and how they do sport.
“I want kids to try, and think of the worst thing that can happen, and if the worst thing does happen then that is okay, because they are strong enough to overcome it - when you are a writer, you have complete control.”
Supported by the Literature Centre, The Young Writers’ collective meets once per term with a special guest author, aiming to provide an “open and encouraging” space for young writers.
With sessions taking place in other regional areas including Albany, Busselton and Geraldton, students said it was an enjoyable experience.
“I went to the Young Writers Collective once before and it was really fun so I decided to go again,” said Year 6 student Hugo Bolto.
