SWFL 2022: Donnybrook pulls off 15-point win on home turf over Eaton Boomers in the wet

Despite having a few notable absentees, Donnybrook have managed their second consecutive win, knocking off Eaton Boomers by 15 points on home turf.

In the Dons’ first home game of the season on Sunday, joint club best and fairest winners Jess Verbrugge and Fleur Parker did not run out with Verbrugge representing WA in the AFLW U18 Champs against South Australia in Adelaide.

Both teams were quick to put the pressure on each other early in the midst of wet conditions but it was Eaton that would break through to score the first goal via Jess Ruland.

Despite a few attempts at goal resulting in minor scores, the Dons eventually responded with a goal from Taneika Handley giving them the four-point advantage before the rain set in at quarter time.

The scrappy contest continued into the second quarter although the Dons were able to take control of the match with an early goal from Lacey Holdsworth.

Strong driving within the midfield saw the Dons continue to extend their lead with a goal from Chelsea Hutchinson, her first in the SWFL Women’s competition.

Eaton’s attempts to respond fell short despite putting in a solid defensive effort.

However, a second goal from Holdsworth saw the margin blow out to 22 points at half time.

The Boomers were firing out of the gate following the half time break with Chloe Hewson booting a goal early.

As the Dons tried to respond, the resurgent Boomers continued their comeback attempt with majors from Ruland and Kira Price.

At the final change, the Dons led 4.6 (30) to 4.0 (24).

The final term saw the Dons frantically attempting to extend their lead once again, ultimately finding success in an early goal from Kirryn Williams.

However, as the rain returned, the contest became a scrappy once again as both teams battled for territory with a number of behinds scored.

At the final siren, the Dons held on to take the win 5.10 (40) to 4.1 (25).
