Bunbury man Wai Hau Tsui placed on supervision order after possessing cannabis to sell to others

A 31-year-old Bunbury man has been given an opportunity to continue rehabilitating himself from cannabis use after admitting he possessed almost 300g of the drug and supplied it to friends. Wai Hau Tsui appeared in Bunbury Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was placed on a 12-month intensive supervision order for a number of drug charges including possessing cannabis with intent to sell or supply. The court was told police officers conducted a search of Tsui’s home on May 15 last year when they uncovered several items throughout his bedroom. During the search, officers located two clipseal bags containing a total of 10g of cannabis, a grinder that contained some loose cannabis material and $1035 in cash. Police also located 12 clipseal bags that contained a total of 292g of cannabis inside Tsui’s walk-in wardrobe. In an interview conducted several days after the search, Tsui gave no comment to police. In submissions, Tsui’s defence counsel Mark Andrews told the court his client had no prior criminal history in Australia or Hong Kong, where he was born. Mr Andrews submitted financial stress drove Tsui to start using cannabis to cope two years ago and he was initially supplied the drug by his “like-minded housemate”. However, to get around the cost of buying the drug, Tsui started growing his own cannabis for his own use but eventually began selling it to friends when they found out he was growing the drug. It was submitted Tsui grew four plants of a “modest size” inside his shed and they had been harvested a short time before police conducted their search. Mr Andrews also told the court that since his arrest, his client had ceased consuming the drug and had self-referred to drug counselling. Along with the intensive supervision order, Tsui was also fined $600 and ordered to pay court costs.
