Father’s Day cold front deluge breaks Collie’s big dry

After a relatively dry winter, Collie experienced a deluge of rain last week, with the wet period culminating in a record-breaking downfall on Sunday. Collie recorded 60.4mm of rain on Sunday thanks to what the Bureau of Meteorology dubbed “the Father’s Day cold front”. The downpour broke the previous record for the wettest September day in Collie, surpassing the 57.7mm recorded on September 30, 1971. Sunday also brought more than two-thirds of the average rainfall for the entire month, which sits at 99.7mm. The huge drop went against the trends of the recently completed winter, which BoM meteorologist Jessica Lingard said was particularly dry. “Collie had a below-average June, July and August,” she said. “There were some particularly wet days in June, but when you look at the averages it was pretty dry. “We had a cold front moving through over the weekend and it just brought with it a good drop of rain.” The day was well forecast, with the bureau expecting “up to 50 or 60mm” in parts of the South West.
