No ball?: Sheffield Shield final hundred goes begging for Bunbury’s Sam Whiteman after controversial decision

Bunbury batter Sam Whiteman has come agonisingly close to a dogged century on day one of the Sheffield Shield final — dismissed in controversial fashion with the last ball before tea. Whiteman opened the batting with Cameron Bancroft after Victoria won the toss and sent the home side in to bat, but fell for 85. The pair were both seemingly nearing hundreds when Whiteman flashed at a Scott Boland delivery outside off which caught the outside edge and flew to Will Sutherland at gully. But replays indicate Boland may have over-stepped the popping crease. The seamer, who became a cult-hero during his three-test cameo at the end of summer’s Ashes series, may have had a tiny part of his heel behind the line, but only the middle part of his foot was grounded. “Hold on … did he have it on the ground? That is a problem I think,” Australian great Andrew Symonds said in commentary for Fox Cricket. “You have got to ground it — then you can go up — but I don’t know if he grounded it before his heel raised.” It left WA at 1-188 at tea on the first day at the WACA, with Bancroft and Whiteman putting together the highest ever opening stand for the State in a four-day final. It beat the previous record, held by test legend Mike Hussey and fellow West Aussie gun Ryan Campbell in 1998 — the last time the match was held in Perth. The dismissal brought captain Shaun Marsh to the crease, while Bancroft was 94 not out at the break. WA are chasing their first Sheffield Shield title since the 1998-99 season, when they beat Queensland in the final at the GABBA. Dunsborough pace ace Lance Morris is also in the starting XI.
