SWFL 2022: Harvey Bulls head to VC Mitchell Park for must-win clash against Donnybrook

The Harvey Bulls head to VC Mitchell Park on Sunday, for a must-win clash against Donnybrook.

Aside from an opportunity to retain the prestigious Hickman Cup, a family-based trophy contested each year between both clubs, the Bulls will have an opportunity to put a frustrating fortnight behind them.

However, during last Sunday’s three-point loss against South Bunbury, the Bulls found a massive positive, with Michael Bennell booting five goals.

This was particularly satisfying for Bulls coach Mark Pink.

“He has played a few league games in the WAFL and has talent,” Pink said. “Michael approached us — we did not approach him and I believe you have to give kids a chance all of the time in life.

“He is another young fella we are reaching an arm out to, and he can play. I think he would be better suited in the dry weather, but I think four of his goals came in the first half for us.”

The inclusion of Bennell has added an extra dimension to the Bulls’ forward line, given the success both Brad Holmes and Tyson Powell have enjoyed together this season.

But Pink is acutely aware of how strong Donnybrook are, especially on their home deck and is predicting a tough contest.

“We treasure the special games like this one,” he said. “Think Mental Health and Indigenous rounds as well, you treasure all of these things.

“I think if we can get over the top of this one (defeat Donnybrook), we may be able to get on a bit of run that we are hoping for. But Donnybrook? Up there they are tough.

“They have had a good year as well and they are another club exactly the same as us — trying to rebuild and move up the ladder. I am really looking forward to this week.”

The Hickman Family Cup is played in honour of Noel and Marilyn Hickman, and recognises not only their many years of service to the Donnybrook Football Club, but their close affiliation with the Bulls.
