WA Country Football League cancels Country Championships for all three divisions due to latest lockdown

The West Australian Country Football League has cancelled the 2021 Nutrien Ag Country Championships for the second consecutive season, after Perth and Peel were plunged into lockdown last night. It comes after fresh cases of COVID-19, saw Premier Mark McGowan announce a four-day lockdown, which could be extended should more positive tests be returned this week. In a statement today the WACFL said the league, women’s and colts carnivals would all be cancelled. “The WA Country Football League, in conjunction with Nutrien Ag Solutions, has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Nutrien Ag Country Country Football Championships due to the current lockdown measures in place within the Perth and Peel regions,” the statement read. “The cancellation includes the Women’s Country Football Championships, the CBH Group Colts Championships and the Nutrien Ag Country Football Championships.” The women’s championship was set to start on Saturday, with the colts beginning on July 8, followed by the league on July 9. Games were set to be played at WAFL venues in both Perth and Peel. The WACFL said uncertainty around the length of the lockdown led to the decision. “The WACFL has made the decision based on the uncertainty around restrictions lifting and believe it is in the best interests of the competing teams and our communities to make this decision as early as possible,” the statement read. The South West Football League was set to send teams to all three carnivals, and named its women’s squad at a ceremony at league head quarters last night. South Bunbury’s Bethany Bond and Busselton’s Rennie Meadmore were set to co-captain which would have been coached by two-time women’s premiership winning coach Maxwell Jetta. The league side, which was to be coached by Bunbury premiership coach Jamie Nani, had not yet been announced.
