Winthrop fire: Home destroyed after fire sparked in garage

A man has saved two dogs from a raging fire that destroyed a Winthrop home on Tuesday night.

Firefighters arrived at the house on Holland Close about 5.30pm to find it completely engulfed in flames.

The fire started in the garage of the property before it quickly spread.

Firefighters managed to put out the blaze by 9pm, but the home was badly damaged.

Vision obtained by 7NEWS shows a man baring the intense flames to save two small dogs who ran back inside the burning property.

It is reported a mother and son who reside at the home escaped without injury.

Friends of the family told 7NEWS the mother who lived at the home was run over by a car four months ago and that she had returned home from a doctor’s appointment hours before the blaze.

Social media users reported seeing embers flying through the suburb as emergency services quickly filled the street.

DFES fire investigator Stuart Parks said firefighters did a “fantastic job” to save neighbouring properties considering the ferocity of the fire.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said it is unknown how the blaze started.

Fire investigation officers attended the scene on Wednesday alongside family members.
