The West Australian sports reporter Jackson Barrett takes a look at what’s happening in the country and amateur leagues around WA in his weekly column.

Stone the flamin’ crows

English Test cricketer Olly Stone played for Premier Cricket club Bayswater-Morley at the weekend.

Stone, who has played three Tests, eight one-day internationals and a T20 for England, made his debut for the Perth club against Scarborough at the weekend.

The injury-plagued quick is building from his latest setback, playing two games for Nottinghamshire’s second XI before heading down under for the summer.

The 30-year-old’s most recent Test match came in 2021, but he played his one-and-only 20-over match for England late last year, just months before the side went on to win the World Cup.

And the Scarborough side he faced on Saturday has to be seen to be believed.

The Gulls wheeled out Josh Philippe — this week bound for India to play for Australia — Perth Scorchers stars Lance Morris, Cooper Connolly and Andrew Tye and former WA-contracted rookie Matthew Spoors.

Bayswater-Morley were bowled out for 194 on the first day. Stone made three off 12 balls batting at No.9, while Morris took three wickets.

Connolly made an unbeaten 50 before stumps. His Gulls finished the first day of the two-dayer 1-100. It’s not very often you see a former Test star playing second-grade in the country.

Like father, like son ... and other son!

It’s also not very often a father gets the chance to pile on a monster 349-run partnership with his son.

But ex-Western Australian batter Murray Goodwin did just that. Goodwin smacked 234 off just 122 against Burekup in the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association’s second tier for powerhouse club Colts at the weekend, while teenage son Ashton hit 135 off 124 balls.

Colts powered to 6-439 from their 50 overs and won the game by a massive 258 runs.

It was Goodwin’s first game back this season after he was banned for an incident in last season’s first-grade grand final. His suspension was reduced to six matches.

The remarkable father-son partnership came just over a week after Murray’s eldest son, Jayden, helped WA to a thrilling Sheffield Shield victory over South Australia at the WACA.
