The Dunsborough Sharks capped off an unforgettable beginning to life in the SWFL with a stirring 5.9 (39) to 5.6 (36) colts win over Bunbury on Sunday afternoon at the Dunsborough Playing Fields. Prior to the clash, many expected both sides to get the best out of each other — and the players duly delivered, providing a contest with no shortage of atmosphere. The Sharks had the better of the opening exchanges, with Cory Botica and Sam Goldstone prominent. Equally impressive were Bulldogs duo Luka Coulson and Fraser Gilchrist, who put forward his nomination for goal of the season. With the visitors deep into attack midway during the opening term, Gilchrist appeared to be out of room as he gathered the football 35m out from goal on a severe angle. In the blink of an eye, Gilchrist wheeled around on to his right foot and dribbled through a fantastic shot, which endlessly bounced through for a team-lifting goal. However the Sharks were not to be denied, recording their first victory across all SWFL competitions. In a busy weekend of action, South Bunbury’s Morgan Lane also had an afternoon to remember on Saturday, booting 14 goals in his side’s 20.11 (131) to 5.1 (31) win over Busselton at Sir Stewart Bovell Park.
