SWFLW 2022: WAFLW experience proves the difference for league leaders Bunbury

In a match dominated by mid-season signings across the board, women’s league leaders Bunbury had one priceless intangible on their side — WAFLW experience. Benefitting from the return of Ruby Mahony from Swan Districts and 2019 joint Nola Marino medalist Ebony Bilcich once again, the Bulldogs were able to pull away from Donnybrook to win 6.9 (45) to 4.4 (28) on Sunday at Payne Park. Heading into the clash, the Bulldogs knew a solid performance against a fellow genuine contender was imperative, given it would be their final opportunity to play until at least September 10. With both sides filled to the brim with quality players, scoring was at a premium early, as an attritional battle in the corridor prevailed. Somewhat against the run of play, the Dons took an early lead, with enterprising youngster Charli Wicksteed in the thick of things, as was classy stalwart Fleur Parker. However with 50th gamer Abby Gellard gradually taking control in the ruck for the Bulldogs — Mahony, 2020 Nola Marino medalist Kloe Bassett and fellow 50th gamer Sarina Tassone began to find more of the ball. Wherever by design or misfortune, SWFL women’s competition spearhead Bethany Bond spent most of play further up the ground, which denied the Dons a dual focal point in attack alongside Lacey Holdsworth. Bilcich’s experienced decision-making and penetrating kicks into the forward line eventually proved too much for the Dons’ defence, with Charity Ryder and Shana-Lee Beardman able to break the game open in the shadows of three-quarter-time. Holdsworth kicked truly in the opening minute of the final term to keep the visitors’ faint hopes of victory alive, before Mahony capped off her five-star afternoon a short time later by taking a strong mark at the Herbert Road end and slotting a goal from directly in front.
