Western Force stars Dylan Pietsch and Ben Donaldson fly out of Wallabies camp after sustaining injuries

It is a case of one in, two out for Western Force’s Wallabies contingent, with winger Dylan Pietsch and fly-half Ben Donaldson heading home and Hamish Stewart arriving in South Africa after a famous Australian win. And the Wallabies have acknowledged the pressure cooker they will face and are prepared for a backlash from the hosts in their Rugby Championship rematch in Cape Town on Saturday. Australia are still basking in the glow of their superb comeback victory over the back-to-back world champions, their 62-year Ellis Park hoodoo snapped after they piled on 38 unanswered points to beat the Springboks 38-22. But the win, which saw Australia hold South Africa scoreless for more than an hour after shipping three tries and a penalty in the first 19 minutes, came at a cost ahead of Saturday’s rematch. Pietsch, who scored Australia’s opening try to make it two in as many games, sustained a jaw fracture in a collision with South African captain Siya Kolisi. Pietsch will have surgery. Donaldson, who was omitted from the Wallabies squad after a last-minute training injury on Thursday, has returned home after scans confirmed he had suffered an adductor strain. Stewart, the Force’s dependable inside centre, has flown to South Africa to provide cover following Donaldson’s injury, while Queensland outside back Filipo Daugunu will cover Pietsch’s absence. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt and lock Will Skelton are braced for a response from South Africa after the Springboks stunningly coughed up the massive lead. “We know that pressure is coming. I’ve coached against the Boks with a few other international teams and come out second,” Schmidt said. “A lot of the boys are already onto next week. The boys are reviewing, everyone’s clipping stuff,” Skelton said. “We know what’s going to come. They’re going to try and punch you in the face this week. So we’re going to have to have a good week of preparation again, and really fight until the end.” There are more injury issues for the Wallabies, with games record holder James Slipper flying home after suffering a head knock and failing a head injury assessment post-game. Slipper’s absence could open the door for newly minted Nathan Sharpe Medal winner Tom Robertson, with the Force prop a chance to return to the bench. Robertson, who played the entire Super Rugby Pacific season at tighthead, was the Wallabies’ reserve tighthead for the first two Tests against the British and Irish Lions, although Zane Nonggorr has been preferred to back up Taniela Tupou in the No.3 jersey since then. Robertson is a natural loosehead and Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt requested he play in the No.1 jersey during the Force’s clash against the Lions and he put in an impressive performance. While Rhys van Nek has been called into the Wallabies squad to replace Slipper, Robertson’s experience will put him in the frame to spell Angus Bell, who made a huge impact in the second half of the win over South Africa. Wallabies captain Harry Wilson has also gone for scans after appearing to hurt himself while scoring his second try against South Africa, but could still be a chance to play on Saturday.
