Man fights for life after suspected robot vacuum explosion in Perth home

A man is fighting for life with burns to most of his body after a robot vacuum exploded in his Perth home.

Lachie Perrem, 25, was in the kitchen of his Brabham home, about 21km northeast of Perth, at about 5pm on July 2,when the appliance exploded.

Mr Perrem, who lives in the house with his fiancee and housemates, was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth in a critical condition and has since undergone several surgeries.

7News footage shows the walls blackened with soot from the explosion, which spread from the kitchen to the living room.

Firefighters told NewsWire they believed the explosion was “accidental due to a fault in a robotic vacuum cleaner”.

“The device has been sent to Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) for further investigation,” a DFES spokesperson told NewsWire.

In an online fundraiser, Mr Perrem’s mother Fiona said their world “has been turned upside down” by the 25-year-old’s injuries.

A 25-year-old from Perth has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after a robot vacuum reportedly exploded inside his house.

“(Lachie) suffered burns to approximately 75 per cent of his body and is currently under sedation in hospital,” she wrote in the GoFundMe.

“He is facing an incredibly long road ahead, with multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and months of recovery.”

The GoFundMe has raised $18.600 of its $20,000 goal.

His fiancee Bri said the “last few days have been completely unimaginable”.

“Our entire life has changed in a matter of moments and everything has been incredibly intense and overwhelming. My hearts completely shattered,” she wrote online.

“As heartbreaking as the circumstances are, he is now lucky enough for it to be his turn to receive all of the love, kindness and generosity that he has spent his life giving to everyone else.

“Lachie has an incredibly long road ahead of him, and right now all we want is for him to keep fighting, heal and eventually come home.”
