Leavers 2021: Police vow to hunt down Bunbury Year 12 students involved in shocking scavenger hunt videos

Police are trying to identify Year 12 students in the State’s south involved in two sordid scavenger hunts featuring teens brazenly having sex in public and snorting drugs off scantily clad bodies. The West Australian on Thursday revealed school leavers from Manea Senior College and Bunbury Senior High School had taken part in a series of end-of-year challenges which left education officials reeling and their communities shocked. It can now be exclusively revealed police are investigating the matter, while schools have announced culprits will be banned from graduation ceremonies. Students from the schools have reacted to the public backlash against the scavenger hunts, with a number publishing TikTok videos about how taken aback they were. In one post on Thursday, a student mimed “what the f...” and wrote: “The scav from ur (sic) school has become national news and pictures are being posted on media outlets everywhere.” Another student puts both middle fingers to the camera and wrote: “When every other south west (sic) school does scav (sic) hunt and don’t (sic) get their nudes posted on the front of every news paper (sic).” Copies of the checklist of tasks involved in the Bunbury school scavenger hunts showed participants — some of whom are underage — being challenged to earn points by completing tasks such as having oral sex in a public park, posting full frontal nude images to their social media, snorting “a line” off a person’s buttocks and smoking their pubic hairs. Videos obtained by The West show a male student snorting a line of white powder, a pair seemingly having sexual intercourse at a football oval, another appearing to have oral sex at a public park and a boy drinking water from a bong in public. A Department of Education spokesperson said police were now investigating the hunts and confirmed any student involved in the contests would not attend their school’s graduation. MSC is holding its graduation ceremony on Thursday night, while BSHS is due to host its presentation night in December. “Both schools are urgently looking to identify the students who have participated in these illegal activities,” the spokesperson said. “Those students who are identified will not be attending their graduation ceremonies. “Schools always take this stance with Year 12 leavers’ events, and students and parents are well aware of the consequences of inappropriate behaviour. Year 12 students have finished formal schooling so there are limited consequences schools can enforce.” The department said on Wednesday principals of both schools were aware scavenger hunts were taking place but did not know specific details. DoE deputy director-general Melesha Sands said those involved had let themselves, their families and schools down with their “appalling and unacceptable” behaviour.
