Repeat drunk driver Sung Lee Tan released on parole after serving two years over death of Jack McCormack

A repeat drunk driver who killed a 21-year-old man as he helped his rideshare driver change a tyre on the side of the Mitchell Freeway is set to be released on parole next week after two years behind bars. Seng Lee Tan, 39, was twice the legal blood alcohol limit when it is believed he fell asleep at the wheel, crossed into the emergency lane of the Mitchell Freeway and fatally hit Jack McCormack in August 2021. Mr McCormack was helping to tighten the wheel of the ride-share vehicle he had ordered to take him home. The 21-year-old suffered catastrophic injuries and died in hospital. Tan later recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.102. Tan — who had two prior convictions for drunk driving — was sentenced to four years of jail time; however, after serving his minimum time of two years, he is set to be released on parole next week. Mr McCormack’s mother, Natalie McCormack, said the news was “heartbreaking” and believes the justice system is too lenient on offenders. “(Knowing) that he’s going to be back into society, it’s obviously very hard for us, and it’s still very, very raw,” Ms McCormack told 6PR on Tuesday. “It was honestly very heartbreaking. “I don’t think our justice system is much of a deterrent ... it’s just so many slaps on the wrists, and you get this revolving door type justice system. “It needs a huge, huge overhaul, and I think there’s a lot more to be done in that space, honestly, so if Jack’s story can take that forward, then I will do what I can to influence that.” When Tan’s sentence was handed down in 2022, Ms McCormack said she believed a four-year sentence was also too merciful on the repeat drunk driver. “It wasn’t enough, honestly, and I’m not sure what would have been enough to be truthful,” she said. “But certainly, when you think about him being released after two years, even a four-year sentence, it really didn’t seem like it would have much of an impact on him, and that was really disappointing.” She said she still holds concerns that Tan will get behind the wheel drunk again. Three years on from the traumatic incident, Ms McCormack remembered her young son as having a “love of life” and with a “great” future ahead of him. “He had a real love of life; he was a great friend and a real positive person,” Ms McCormack said. “He just wanted to get everything out of every moment of life; he was super caring of others ... he had a great future ahead of him. “He was a big presence in our family, and he was loved enormously ... he was a great guy, honestly.”
